it's hard to think of any debilitating social ills softcore porn on cellphones might unleash – aside from a potential increase in hairy palms and blindness. to hear critics tell it, however, telus' january introduction of pornographic pictures and videos for sale (downloadable for $3 or $4 each) is dialing towards gomorrah. vancouver's catholic archbishop raymond roussin has threatened a boycott, and the globe and mail weighed in this week with an amusingly priggish editorial, calling the company a “porn peddler” and sanctimoniously asking, “what does it say about our world when 24-hour access to porn through so many distribution channels isn't enough?”
the obvious response to the rhetorical question is that it says we are keenly interested in sex and would like it available in a pocket-sized form. telus is just recognizing the demand and trying to share in the profits. besides, the other communications companies are already peddling porn: bell canada through phone-sex lines, satellite television service and the internet; rogers through cable television and the internet; even (gasp!) canada post, who charge companies to deliver hardcore pornographic magazines through the mail.
let the catholic church boycott. and let the puritanical editorialists at the globe avoid the temptations offered by their phones. but the rest of us may want to consider this new phenomenon: surfing the web with one hand has never been easier.
